Pictures of the Month: August 2008

Garamba National Park, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo)

We've chosen some historical photographs again this month, because there's just been an official announcement that the northern white rhino is probably extinct. Mark took these incredibly rare pictures of several individuals in the wild in February 1989. They were taken from an anti-poaching patrol light aircraft and while stalking on foot. There were estimated to be 5,000 northern white rhinos in 1965 - but severe poaching by heavily-armed Ugandan and Sudanese rebels had reduced the numbers to just 22 by the time of Mark's visit.

Northern white rhino (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) - now probably extinct
