On the Trail of the Whale (with a foreword by Paul McCartney)

Mark's 1994 classic – written when he (and most of the rest of the world) was new to whale watching. This is the hilarious story of a year spent criss-crossing the globe, from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific, in search of whales. He swam with pilot whales in the Canary Islands, listened to singing humpback whales in Hawaii and joined an ex-whaler to look for Bryde's whales in Japan. He got soaking wet with a minke whale in Scotland, went in search of blue whale in war-torn Sri Lanka and camped within sight and sound of grey whales along the wild Pacific coast of Mexico. Along the way, he was threatened with a sub-machine gun, made friends with a wild bottlenose dolphin, bumped into a surprisingly friendly venomous snake and, in New Zealand, even had a young sperm whale named after him.

WARNING: THIS IS AN OLD BOOK - WRITTEN IN THE DAYS WHEN MARK USED TO HAVE A MEXICAN-BANDIT MOUSTACHE (SEE THE BACK COVER) - AND MAY BE A LITTLE DISCOLOURED.

"Whether he's listening for sperm whales with a ski pole and part of an old telephone handset, sharing a tent with an eccentric surgeon from Halifax or coaxing a dolphin to peer into his diving mask, his writing is always compelling" The Good Book Guide
